Eixample

Cerdà's grid, built for air and movement

Eixample is Barcelona's great 19th-century expansion, laid out when the old walled city could no longer contain its growth. Engineer Ildefons Cerdà planned it as a rational grid of broad streets and chamfered corners, and once you are in it, the logic is easy to read. The crossings feel wider, the pavements more generous and the blocks more regular than in the medieval centre. For travellers, that means a district that is unusually easy to walk: spacious, legible and full of long sightlines.

Where Modernisme lives on the street

This is also where Barcelona's architecture becomes part of everyday life. Along Passeig de Gràcia and the surrounding streets, Modernisme appears in carved stone, stained glass, floral ironwork and balconies that turn an ordinary façade into something theatrical. Some of the city's best-known buildings are here, including Gaudí's Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, but Eixample is not only about headline sights. Even on quieter blocks, you notice patterned floors in old entrance halls, timber doors, tiled lobbies and façades worth slowing down for.

A district that balances grandeur and routine

What makes Eixample memorable is the way grand architecture sits inside daily Barcelona life. Office workers stop for coffee under plane trees; locals queue at bakeries; terraces fill up in the evening. The district covers a large area, with a more polished feel around Passeig de Gràcia and a livelier, more residential rhythm as you move into other parts of the neighbourhood. It suits travellers who want more than a quick photo stop: somewhere to walk without hurry, look up often and feel how the city breathes between its famous landmarks.
