Guía editorial

Mossen Costa I Llobera Gardens

A cactus garden above the port

Mossen Costa i Llobera Gardens sit on the south-east slope of Montjuïc, facing the sea and catching more sun than many other green corners in Barcelona. That exposure creates a mild microclimate, which is why this hillside can hold such a striking collection of cacti and succulents. Instead of lawns and shade, you get sculptural plants, dry textures and a landscape that feels almost improbable so close to the city centre and the harbour.

What you notice on site

The pleasure here is visual and immediate. Tall column cacti rise beside agaves, prickly pears and other drought-loving species, with the Mediterranean and the port appearing between them. The paths are broad enough for an easy stroll, and the terraces open onto long views that feel quieter than many of Barcelona’s better-known lookouts. It is less about ticking off monuments and more about the contrast: desert forms, salt air and the working waterfront below.

Why travellers make the detour

If you are already on Montjuïc, these gardens offer a different register from the hill’s museums, fort and formal parks. They are good when you want a pause with a clear sense of place: sea light, hillside paths and a side of Barcelona that feels spacious rather than crowded. The gardens also work well in combination with a longer walk around Montjuïc, especially on bright days when the planting and views are at their sharpest.
