Passeig de Gràcia

This was once the city's elegant promenade, and it still feels dressed for the occasion. As you walk uphill from Plaça de Catalunya, wrought-iron lamps, patterned paving and landmark façades turn an ordinary stroll into a close-up of Barcelona's Modernism

Passeig de Gràcia

Barcelona's grand Modernisme avenue

Passeig de Gràcia is one of those streets that tells you a great deal about Barcelona without needing a museum label. Laid out as part of the city's 19th-century expansion, it became the address of the Catalan bourgeoisie, and the architecture still carries that confidence. Here, elegant apartment houses, carved stone balconies and decorative ironwork turn a city walk into a sequence of façades worth reading slowly.

What to look at as you walk

The best-known landmarks are Gaudí's Casa Batlló and Casa Milà, better known as La Pedrera, both on the avenue and both very different in mood. Nearby, the so-called "Block of Discord" gathers several standout Modernisme buildings on the same stretch, making it one of the easiest places in Barcelona to compare styles building by building. Look down as well as up: the patterned paving slabs, designed for the avenue, are part of its character.

How the street feels on the ground

This is not just a parade of famous façades. Passeig de Gràcia is broad, polished and very walkable, with smart shops, cafés and regular crossings that make it easy to take in at your own pace. Starting near Plaça de Catalunya and walking uphill towards the Gràcia district gives you the clearest sense of its scale. Come in daylight for architectural detail, or in the evening when the lamps and illuminated façades soften the street into something more theatrical.
